I believe one of the most important things that I have learned in the class is knowing the importance of what each setting on the camera means. I never really paid much attention to what shutter speed did, aperture means, and even how ISO affects a picture. The exposure of each shot is important because that is what determines if your picture will be dark enough, light enough, too bright or dark, and so on. Knowing how to adjust for these settings really helps in how to make a picture really turn out how I want it to. <br />
Another thing that was taught in the class through the book and emphasized a lot throughout was the importance of dominance. There are many things in a picture that will dominate over the others, and even help to make the picture work for a great picture instead of just a good one. A couple of these that I made sure to keep in mind while taking shots was the fact that red is more attractive than yellow, large is better than small, difference is more noticeable than conformity, and so on. Many of my shots recently have to do with large to small objects with a limited depth of field. Basically, I took many macro shots where there was one basic center of focus that I wanted with the most detail, and a background with less focus and even blurred. <br />
Then to mess with the depth of field in larger shots, it was helpful to learn about things such as aperture priority, and even the different types of lenses that are useful in different situations. For those long landscape shots, a 500mm to 700mm lens would be the perfect lens in this action, for it would allow for that sufficient zoom level and long wide depth of field. Another bit of information that I found very useful covered I this class was the use of backlighting, front lighting, side lighting and more. These help for I know now that the best time to shoot is early morning sunrise, and also evening sunset. Also, another handy use of this class was a better understanding and usage of the photoshop program that I own.<br />
One thing that I have always loved doing was working with photoshop, fixing up photos just a little more than what I took them at. Photo shop is one thing from this class that I will definitely carry on from this photography course. More importantly, I will be using the different exposure settings to ensure better quality of my photos, because I now have a better understanding to how the settings work.derek-encisohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05037593602966972923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8815776125783193477.post-32867395180538213952010-11-23T09:13:00.000-08:002010-11-23T09:33:29.732-08:00Final Presentation Photos<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEG7-g_TRQtnVkigK9rdfMOC_-t8KIGb8VDMU84aDti9U84Eyl51Tw_o4ITxlFbZW3HsTYJ80h6vWhSdEY2l36mFTPq3Vx7naecQl7Ck_Qd8WddxDtnSMrtSiisVwXkG6q45L4xsQJMLw/s1600/blkwhtredleaves.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEG7-g_TRQtnVkigK9rdfMOC_-t8KIGb8VDMU84aDti9U84Eyl51Tw_o4ITxlFbZW3HsTYJ80h6vWhSdEY2l36mFTPq3Vx7naecQl7Ck_Qd8WddxDtnSMrtSiisVwXkG6q45L4xsQJMLw/s320/blkwhtredleaves.jpg" width="256" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"> <link href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CDEREK%7E1.ENC%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml" rel="File-List"></link><link href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CDEREK%7E1.ENC%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_themedata.thmx" rel="themeData"></link><link href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CDEREK%7E1.ENC%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_colorschememapping.xml" rel="colorSchemeMapping"></link><style>

The first main section of this part goes over many points regarding getting close up to animals in their natural environments and strategies to do so. A lot of the techniques mentioned relate much to the strategies used in hunting as well. One of the most important things to do before going out and photographing wildlife is to study the natural history and background of the animals intended to shoot. The reasons why this must be done, is for the purpose of knowing how close you are able to get to an animal without disrupting their comfort zones and if not there is the risk of getting shots that are out of the animals natural being. <br />
Sometimes there are animals that you need to keep around for hours or even days just to get them comfortable enough around you, so that they will loosen back up and act natural around you/the photographer. Other than stalking animals, there is always the option of using a blind which is best used on birds rather than mammals and should be strategically placed or used. A vehicle is a good blind because most animals are not intimidated by its appearance and does not present a huge threat. Also, depending on the distance from the animal, you may choose to either use a 700mm telephoto lens, or a standard 500mm lens. Sometimes baiting an animal with peanut butter and such items may be used, but that is optional depending on prided some photographers are.<br />
The next section describes different ways to capture your subjects in action, within their natural habitats. Knowing your habitats is important for the knowledge that there are many wildlife refuges around everywhere, and with quick research it is easy to find where you need to be for certain species in their natural acts. Being on site early before the animal itself is up and moving is a good idea, because you will then be able to be in its habitat and catch their acts undetected with no disturbances to the animals natural acts. Finding your better angles and editing photos later is also another good way to get the actions shots you want and need, because for every second lost editing could be that second you need for that perfect shot. Knowing your camera is also important for example, when shooting smaller birds the camera needs to have a faster shutter speed in order to stop it in its motion.<br />
While taking wildlife portraits it is important to know the advantages of using a telephoto lens and also there is a technique mentioned called the three-layer picture space. In the three-layer picture space there is a foreground, midground, and background. I think the most important part of this section lies in the anatomy of a wildlife portrait, which describes more than 17 different aspects that need particular attention while capturing a shot of a subject.derek-encisohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05037593602966972923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8815776125783193477.post-84261906815780316242010-11-09T12:53:00.001-08:002010-11-09T12:53:44.558-08:00Part Two of book<link href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CDEREK%7E1.ENC%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml" rel="File-List"></link><link href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CDEREK%7E1.ENC%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_themedata.thmx" rel="themeData"></link><link href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CDEREK%7E1.ENC%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_colorschememapping.xml" rel="colorSchemeMapping"></link><style>

<div class="MsoNormalCxSpFirst" style="line-height: normal;">Part two of the book focuses mostly on exposures, lighting, depth of field, designing your picture space as far as dominance and such. The first part on exposure brings up important information on a feature built into most new digital cameras. The histogram is used to determine points of accuracy of your exposure for a shot. Exposure is controlled by aperture size and shutter speed, which can be set to adjust automatically or be adjusted manually. It is important to know how to adjust exposure settings such as aperture priority, shutter speed, and knowing the different metering patterns used as well in order to adjust for different lighting situations and such. </div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;"> Cameras stick to a neutral 18% grey basis; therefore, you must work against the cameras basic grey adjustments in order to correct it for a more quality picture. The best tip that the book presents about lighting is one that every photographer should know, and that is, try and avoid if at all possible shooting in the bright midday sun. This will only cause your shots to be overly bright, and your detail will be lost to the excessive contrast built up from the overly bright light. The best times to go out and shoot are sunrise and sunset, because the light gives you either front light which is good if you want to portray saturated color, contrast between different colors and fine detail in all parts of the scene; sidelight which produces long, deep shadows that reveal wrinkles, dimples, ridges and other details of a surface in greatest relief; and backlight is great if you want to dramatize on subjects with indistinct, shaggy, peripheries and features. Depth of field comes up and is basically being able to focus on one main part of a subject and defining one specific feature of it, while still revealing a quality portrait of the rest of the subject as well. </div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;"> This is also used in landscapes where either there is one single or a couple of focuses going down the line of one large landscape portrait. Motion effects are mentioned as well where you can either catch a subject such as a hummingbird in mid-motion noticing that there is movement in its wings, while the rest of the bird seems to be still, as well as taking a shot of a stream and having the flow motion blurred from a slowed shutter speed shot. One of the most important sections in this part of the book fall into the dominance section and is a good idea for any photographer to have knowledge of. These are: Red is more attractive than yellow; Large draws more attention than small; difference draws more attention than conformity; jagged lines are more striking than curved ones; diagnol lines are more attractive than vertical ones; sharpness is more attractive than blur; and light is more important than dark. Another basic knowledge of photography mentioned is also the rule of thirds, which sometimes does need to be broken but only in necessary terms. </div>derek-encisohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05037593602966972923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8815776125783193477.post-5520132601774722432010-11-07T22:49:00.000-08:002010-11-07T22:49:11.520-08:0011/04/2010 book blog post pgs1-50<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">I guess to begin this entry I will start with the section of <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Intrigue with Tiny Creatures</i>.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When I take photos, I more than often catch myself taking pictures of things such as leaves, plants, bugs and such close up and otherwise known as micro shots.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>According to the book, you cannot make frame filling records of subjects with plain standard lenses.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It says that you must buy special close-up adapters that are either specially designed for the type of shooting, or macro lenses.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Accessories that they mention include items such as screw on supplementary filters which work just like magnifying glasses. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This is useful to me for future use if I ever intend on really focusing more on macro shots and wanting them to come out with extra quality and they recommend two-element supplementary lenses for the purpose of quality.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Another accessory that the book mentions and are somewhat inexpensive and are available in many stackable sizes are hollow tubes called extension tubes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The next section in the first fifty pages that I find useful is the chapter on super-telephoto lenses.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Under the focal lenses section it begins by providing the basics that if you have a full-frame sensor, anything less than 500mm is too short and anything longer than a 600mm is too long.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>A 500mm lens is more ideal than a 600mm as well because it is only about four or five pounds lighter and allows for more mobility, therefore, less fatigue occurs to the photographer.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">There is the argument that a 600mm lens does come in handy for those far shots on a very tiny subject, but more often than not, photographers will find themselves with over magnified images.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The 500mm lens would be the most ideal for me if I was a professional photographer, being that I am the type that likes to go off trails and through rugged terrains.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They mention ways that you can save on these lenses, or actually cheat build them in a way.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>To do this, you can combine either a 300mm or 400mm lens with 1.4X and 2X tele converters, but quality of an image will be compromised at comparable magnifications.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div>derek-encisohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05037593602966972923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8815776125783193477.post-14024347785652306592010-10-28T11:27:00.000-07:002010-10-28T11:27:01.414-07:00Angle, Distance, and Yes!<div class="MsoNormalCxSpFirst" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>It is amazing of the many different angles that you can present basically the same picture.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In these shots I was just randomly shooting out back of our house along a canal that crosses just on the other side of our fence.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As I was shooting leaves and other things falling in and floating down it, I looked down and saw this plant with some sort of webbing on it.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I thought it would be quite the neat picture.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I looked at my first shot and realized that it really wasn’t all as great as I had figured it would be.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>After taking more pictures and getting ready to leave, I looked back down at the plant and was trying to think of a way to make the shot work. </div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>I started repeatedly taking pictures of the plant with the webbing on it, and then got the idea of getting closer.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Well, that helped a little bit but not of how I was wanting the picture to come out.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Just before getting extremely frustrated with the pictures produced from my shots, I thought, “why don’t I just mess with the angles”.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>“Of course”! <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>With the combination of trying different angles and moving closer, I was able to come to a shot that I liked.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The last one I have posted is like being eye level with the plant, and turned out to be my best shot of it.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The quality of the shot was great and has good detail on the webbing and other things attached to the leaves.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The Land of the Oz</div><div align="center" class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal; text-align: center;">Stepping carefully into Australia</div><div align="center" class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>The author of this article, Bill Hatcher, writes about his adventure into living in the new land to him from the Colorado Plateau to, Australia.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The place he resides to is just on the outskirts of Sydney, Australia which resembles much of America’s southwest desert.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The great thing for him, however, is that he does not live far from what is called the Australian Bush. The “bush” contains a massive variety of animals including some of the worlds’ most venomous snakes and spiders, which I might add that the spider thing would not be to my favor in any way shape or form.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He asks a very important question to himself for living, and also as a photographer as well.</div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Since the author plans to be living in Australia for a few years, “as a photographer who often goes off the beaten path to shoot photos,” he asks, “ is just how dangerous is the Australian countryside.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>For his own knowledge, he does much needed background research on the wildlife both where he lives and in the Australian bush.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Something that I found interesting that he had noted is that 11 of the world’s 15 most venomous snakes reside there in Australia, and that is including the sea snake, tai pan, and king brown snake.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It is also full of many other types of wildlife such as tropical birds, much of what you would find in a jungle because the Australian bush is basically a jungle.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Bill’s main worry as a photographer, however, will rely on him being careful with his steps and observing not only surroundings, but the ground around as well.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Most people whom get bitten by venomous snakes in the bush are generally bitten in the ankle, which can mean only one thing.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>For the most part people step on the snake or in its space causing it distress and then it bites.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He explains that most of the snakes in the bush are not aggressive and just reclusive and the disruptions disturb their peace.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The reason a snake could be considered most deadly is because they tend to have more human encounters, Bill explains.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;"><br />

Unfortunately, I left a little too late to get the sunset itself and instead took shots of the sun almost down. My gaol now was to get the color of the background with the sillouettes of the trees because i felt like that would be a neat idea. Since it was pretty much dark now, I had to mess with some of the settings on my camera. I set the ISO to about 400 I believe, which was giving me the best quality shots as far as seeing the whole background color with the sillouettes. I got a few decent shots with it, but then they were coming out too dark. In combination with my aperture/exposure going up, my shutter speed would go down. This gave me a much brighter picture, but then I had a blurred effect because i was not able to hold the camera still without a tripod. Then i figured out how to speed up my shutter speed and leave the exposure and aperture close to the same. The result was my second picture down, which came out fairly decently. My favorite shot of these, however, is the very top one.derek-encisohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05037593602966972923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8815776125783193477.post-17845892425632386862010-10-19T11:03:00.000-07:002010-10-19T11:03:47.761-07:005 Favorites<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I was just out shooting different scenes out with my camera while I was at work delivering pizzas. I know that these are not purely nature shots by any means, but still turned out fairly interestingly. The first shot that I took happened to be during sundown sometime where the sky was giving off a beautiful orange, pink, red and blue color in which I thought gave the shot its uniqueness along with the fact that the trees added to the shot. Since it was so bright my camera made the surroundings darker to try and adjust for the light differences. <br />
<br />
The second photo was my favorite of the two because it gives a really nice sense of depth along with illustrating all of the background to come. Also, the road give you that sense of distance in the shot as well. I like that this shot shows the fields, distant hills, sky, clouds, and even some other featuressuch as the signs. The one thing that i wish wasn't there, however, is the car, but it was the best quality shot I had out of all of them.derek-encisohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05037593602966972923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8815776125783193477.post-45010603597829489062010-09-23T11:47:00.000-07:002010-09-23T11:47:01.616-07:009/23 blog<meta content="Word.Document" name="ProgId"></meta><meta content="Microsoft Word 12" name="Generator"></meta><meta content="Microsoft Word 12" name="Originator"></meta><link href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CDEREKE%7E1%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml" rel="File-List"></link><link href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CDEREKE%7E1%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_themedata.thmx" rel="themeData"></link><link href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CDEREKE%7E1%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_colorschememapping.xml" rel="colorSchemeMapping"></link><style>

This last weekend I took out the camera and decided to play around a little bit more with it to try and figure more things on it. I took an abundance of close up pictures since I was nowhere near any places with landscapes that weren’t obscured by any buildings. The three pictures that I have posted in this blog were chosen for a reason. The detail of my central focus points came out very well and clear, but even more important than that is that the detail is even better. When I was scoping of what to take pictures of, I was actually just taking these shots as practice for focusing the camera lens and zoom. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjkEapom_s5L5RW6Oy9uQKUQOFiKKravpqzDlexVYKruAfVNHEdQwaPKKyvVqEF7vJSdSm7QBtU1bf7UPz4S6eOWuqMCi6RQZv4rk4JojpaBsoqWOf3OeWyszKt4zT-5lL8RCjiPPFnLI/s1600/P9080378.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjkEapom_s5L5RW6Oy9uQKUQOFiKKravpqzDlexVYKruAfVNHEdQwaPKKyvVqEF7vJSdSm7QBtU1bf7UPz4S6eOWuqMCi6RQZv4rk4JojpaBsoqWOf3OeWyszKt4zT-5lL8RCjiPPFnLI/s320/P9080378.JPG" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;"> <br />
After loading all of my shots onto the computer, however, I noticed some really neat things on some of them especially the nub of the tree and little pine branch. There were all sorts of webbings and things on there that I did not notice by just standing there looking at them. I came to the realization that some shots can come out even better than you expect just by messing with the settings on the camera and angles. I took many different angled shots on these because the lighting outside was so bright and yet shaded from the trees. After moving to the side I was able to use the side light from the sun and get clearer shots of the pine branch and nub. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvzqSrmGH6z3Ig2EIYJG1hywvEE2kyOHZAbA24U-2Dg-UUaGPrqHkemLJWrVTaFKFe1SRTi4nMpJLzNOqhSndTleBlv-lNY3d-OKA6y8Y-TxdI8eomnwLVkfZuU-hKXQqJO2kzupzzRPA/s1600/P9080376.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvzqSrmGH6z3Ig2EIYJG1hywvEE2kyOHZAbA24U-2Dg-UUaGPrqHkemLJWrVTaFKFe1SRTi4nMpJLzNOqhSndTleBlv-lNY3d-OKA6y8Y-TxdI8eomnwLVkfZuU-hKXQqJO2kzupzzRPA/s320/P9080376.JPG" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;"> <br />
Also, layering played an effect that made the shots come out even better as well. Not only did I get the main object focused on, but I also had a few other elements in the background such as the blurred fence, trees, little bits of lighting and such. Overall it turned out to be a neat little photo shoot. </div>derek-encisohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05037593602966972923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8815776125783193477.post-44422815210383077802010-09-21T11:53:00.000-07:002010-09-21T12:01:35.811-07:00The sky<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrhRV_T_u_vyNDNzF7nZ4dXlnT0F3m0aQ-OWnf0ld81L2ueI4HV4mBJbDh6Bw_Pl4q2Gn51gRnqtMmr2L6VIeaSixC2xb-SaLOYkoSh5wWV0vqXDsQ9X-yDvrRCjsJyeqTAdZj5sNjiF8/s1600/P9190432.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrhRV_T_u_vyNDNzF7nZ4dXlnT0F3m0aQ-OWnf0ld81L2ueI4HV4mBJbDh6Bw_Pl4q2Gn51gRnqtMmr2L6VIeaSixC2xb-SaLOYkoSh5wWV0vqXDsQ9X-yDvrRCjsJyeqTAdZj5sNjiF8/s320/P9190432.JPG" /></a></div>Light is more attractive than dark<br />

Using some of the techniques, or information rather from the book, I experimented around a little bit with some different settings on the camera. For the most part, I focused on using the macro feature on the camera along with different angles of which to shoot the picture. Lighting was another important factor in my shots on the close-up leaves. The sun was just starting to set outside while I was at home, so I decided to experiment with how the light affected the shots on our trees. <br />
I used the side light from the sun that was hitting the leaves from the upper left, and snapped some shots so that the leaves were defined along with the shadows following in front. The shots could have more in likely come out clearer if I had messed with the histogram and aperture setting a little more, but this was just practice. The other technique I used was placing my center of interest. The front leaves were my point of interest, so that they were the most defined and then the leaves in the background sort of blurred out the farther from the center of interest they got.derek-encisohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05037593602966972923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8815776125783193477.post-66063851977842664882010-09-14T12:02:00.001-07:002010-09-14T12:02:58.147-07:00ExposureExposure is a very important thing when it comes to quality of a picture in photography. Metering patterns are very unique in that they are very useful in determining what areas of light the camera will focus on. I somewhat understand the metering and histogram, but with the camera I have, still need a lot of practice with it because in the light there are still dark spots that I don’t want focused on. When winter time comes around and snow falls, I find the information on increasing or decreasing exposure to be of good use. Pictures had never come out clear for me in the snow and now I understand why, which is going to help me better some of my future shots. <br />
One of the best tips from the book that I never really put into consideration before was the fact that you should avoid the midday sun on a clear day if you’re looking for a good shot. There is too much contrast for a digital sensor to record during this time of high lighting by the sun. The types of lighting were of interest to me due to the fact that I was actually playing with a camera this weekend during the dawn hours as I went home. I found the information on backlighting the most useful in getting a clear picture of my brother’s fiancé in the hanging leaves of a tree which was all backlit by the descending sun. I had to focus more on her with the leaves in front, and leave some of the back leaves in blur in order for her not to show up as a silhouette. <br />
Also, I agree with the author in the fact that using a flash during an outdoor shot completely ruins the natural setting and look. However, it is still very handy after nightfall even though you usually end up with mostly the subject and none of the other background unless you have a nice flash set up with your camera. To add on to the quality of the picture that I shot of my brothers fiancé, I think one of the most important features used on the camera and brought up in the book, was the depth of field. The depth of field was used in the sense that the camera focused mainly on her face and then the rest of the background got a little blurry as it moved away from the subject. A useful tip that I sort of figured out on my own, but was better iterated in the book for increasing depth of field, is to first focus on your closest object and then the next just beyond it in a distant depth of field. <br />
The book describes some interesting things about shutter speed, which will turn out to be very useful for future shooting as well. I never understood shutter speed all that well, but now I get it in the fact that the faster the subject/the faster the shutter speed needs to be. In reality, this turns out to be common sense after becoming a little more familiar with the camera I’m using. Panning (leading the subject with the lens) is also very useful and similar to trap shooting in a sense, which can also help reduce blur in an action shot. One of the features that I find to be one of the neatest is Blurring for effect where you set aperture and shutter speed to give a picture a unique abstract blur effect. <br />
Knowing what colors and backgrounds dominate the others is important for knowing what settings and adjustments need to be made to your camera for a better quality shot. For instance if you were to shoot a field of yellow and orange flowers, there is a possibility of blending issues due to the similar coloration of them. There are two important concepts that are mentioned in the book that I have also previously learned in a video production class. The first center of interest that basically means you have one main subject or area that is being focused on and needs to be iterated the most while still coexisting with the background elements. The second is the rule of thirds, which sets your center of interest one third of the way up or down and to either side of the cameras lens. This is used to better the details and beauty of your subject.derek-encisohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05037593602966972923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8815776125783193477.post-74445010532341816552010-09-10T09:56:00.000-07:002010-09-10T09:56:16.702-07:00It's a bird, no a waterfall!<meta content="text/html; charset=utf-8" http-equiv="Content-Type"></meta><meta content="Word.Document" name="ProgId"></meta><meta content="Microsoft Word 12" name="Generator"></meta><meta content="Microsoft Word 12" name="Originator"></meta><link href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CDEREK%7E1.ENC%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml" rel="File-List"></link><link href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CDEREK%7E1.ENC%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_themedata.thmx" rel="themeData"></link><link href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CDEREK%7E1.ENC%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_colorschememapping.xml" rel="colorSchemeMapping"></link><style>

Instead, I had this great idea to search through some of my older photos that I have taken since around 2004 of different things in nature. All of these pictures were taken around my hometown Douglas, Wyoming at different times of the year and were mostly just because I happened to have my camera there at the time. Grant it, all of these were taken by a point and shoot camera with nothing more than a 5 megapixel camera, but the quality on some of them I feel is pretty impressive. The Blue Jay that I captured happened to be injured in my cousin’s back yard, so I happened to get very lucky with getting close shots within one foot of the bird. It was sweet!! The pictures of the bird are by far some of my favorites that I have ever shot. </div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;"> My second favorite shot that I have posted is one that I took of a waterfall on a mountain just above Bolder, Colorado. I had just finished running a trail race with a few friends back home, and on the way down we decided to do some sightseeing. As we hiked back a trail some little ways along a creek, we came upon this decently sized waterfall. I took around twenty or more shots of it just to get a good angle and area on it. The shot came out as good as I could have asked for given the camera I was using at that time. </div><div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;"> Though it is nice to have a great quality camera; in the experience I have had in the past so far, I believe it also takes a smart and skilled photographer to actually make the shot count as well. </div>derek-encisohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05037593602966972923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8815776125783193477.post-19938813992874817432010-09-02T11:51:00.000-07:002010-09-02T11:59:41.665-07:00Natural Faces<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTveYZHG_M_zvlazwFNclfLK3wcmYZA0CDgMd7PZWG3Yserx3UoWmz_dRNo3hycx1xUofWMilESdGPYBCGC-CuB9EskfjYhEhC5SP1Wp8-OfOUDtDW1JuUMi-Yojj8y7AQoZDUd-Ec2kQ/s1600/face-in-trees-illusion.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTveYZHG_M_zvlazwFNclfLK3wcmYZA0CDgMd7PZWG3Yserx3UoWmz_dRNo3hycx1xUofWMilESdGPYBCGC-CuB9EskfjYhEhC5SP1Wp8-OfOUDtDW1JuUMi-Yojj8y7AQoZDUd-Ec2kQ/s320/face-in-trees-illusion.jpg" /></a></div><a class="noborder" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sondyaustin/2788006473/" target="_blank"><br />

As I was searching the web for some unique outdoor pictures, I came across some very unique shots. Unfortunately I was not able to figure out who the actual photographers were, but I found their photos to be very cool. One of the main things that caught my interest was the fact that I see these kinds of thing in nature all of the time. Trees, rocks, and other landscapes in the outdoors form some of the most intriguing designs and even lifelike formations. If you look above to the left, the trees form a woman’s face in the wintery background. Also, I remember finding formations in trees (such as the one in the second link) many times that I am out either running or hiking around. Those are always the moments that I wish I had a camera just so I could show other people. <br />

This chapter in the book talks about the importance of wearing the right temperature regulated clothing once it turns winter. I figured that that it would be very similar to hunting or running techniques, where you want to layer up in case if you get hot. Well the book explains that it is better to wear baggy clothing such as snow pants and also a top with many zippers that are available for air circulation. It also covers how you need to winterize your equipment, and pay attention to light differences as well. As there is little wildlife out during the winter times, the book in essence notes that it’s those little details in the landscapes of snow and such, which really brings out the beauty of a winter shot.derek-encisohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05037593602966972923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8815776125783193477.post-56810860918838674582010-08-31T11:55:00.000-07:002010-08-31T11:55:28.626-07:00Nature Photography: Basic KitThe Main just of this chapter in the Nature Photography book was talking about the basics of a good photography camera and maybe some essentials that could be needed. Something I found interesting that was mentioned and I hadn’t known before is that in order to have a clear calendar size picture or larger, you need a camera over 6.0 megapixels or more. Something else mentioned that the author recommend any nature photographer has after first acquiring the camera is a nice tripod for extra stability during the shot. For shooting landscapes, the book recommends either a Cannon or Nikon with full frame sensors. The chapter gives me a good basis where to start in looking for a decent camera maybe for the future.derek-encisohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05037593602966972923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8815776125783193477.post-33450534282956267492010-08-26T11:51:00.000-07:002010-08-26T11:51:36.902-07:00Brian Jorg/Mexican Wolfhttp://www.critterzone.com/animal-pictures-nature/mammal-wolf-mexican.htm<br />

<br />
Brian Jorg is a Horticulturist who has worked for the Cincinnati zoo and Botanical Garden since 2004. His passion is taking photos of the outdoors and has had much of his work published in many different magazines, books, field guides, post cards and more. Brian dedicates more than 20,000 miles a year to take photographs in various places such as Alaska, Newfoundland, The Galapagos and many more foreign continents. In my search I found Some pictures that photographer Brian Jorg had taken of a Mexican wolf that caught my interest. What I liked most about the shots were the clarity in which they came out, but also how natural the wolves look in the camera shots. They are not looking toward the camera and instead had their attention set on whatever the wolf would naturally be doing. The shots of the wolves were in their natural settings, and the attention was not set on the distraction of the photographer himself. To me, catching the wildlife in its natural everyday routine, much like Brian Jorg has done with his pictures of the wolves is just as unique as catching a photo of something lying on the ground in such a way that you will never see again. From what I see in these pictures, him nor anyone else will ever get those same shots.derek-encisohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05037593602966972923noreply@blogger.com0
